9 Easy Organization Tips for the Bedroom
These 9 Easy Organization Tips help make everyday life easier. And who wouldn’t want that? Here are some to help you be more organized with your bedroom storage.
Easy Organization Tip 1
Use Velvet Hangers
I used to keep my summer clothes in one closet and the winter ones in another closet. Each season, I’d move the appropriate ones to my bedroom. They now all fit in one closet because I changed out my hangers! My good friend, Terry, recommended getting velvet hangers. I bought 25 and liked them so much that I got 100 more. Sam’s Club has them at a great price of $12.98 for 50.
Nothing slips off these hangers. The are great for wide-necked items and slick fabrics! What I like best is the amount of space they save because of their slim design. I now have 120 shirts hanging in one double closet! As you can see in the picture, they are not crowded. Because it’s just the two of us, I do hang seldom worn items, such as dress pants and dresses in another closet. If I would pare down my tops, everything would easily fit into the one closet.
Easy Organization Tip 2
Sort Hanging Clothes by Color
I recommend taking 10-15 minutes to sort your hanging clothes by color. After the initial sorting, it doesn’t take any extra time to always hang the clothes with corresponding colors.
This saves time, when trying to match clothes. It also helps you not pick out the same outfits time after time. You can do this by always hanging the one just worn to the right of the others. If you find that you keep passing over some, it’s probably time to donate them to charity. If you don’t wear it, don’t wait until it becomes out of style; donate now so someone else less fortunate can be stylishly dressed. It’s always nice to donate items before they are worn out, too!
Because I have winter and summer tops together, I hang the short-sleeved ones on the left and long-sleeved ones on the right. I know I sound a bit OCD, but it’s just so easy to keep your clothes sorted.
It’s also beneficial to have your clothes sorted by color to simplify your clothes shopping. Before I go out, I can quickly look in my closet and tell that I definitely do not need any more black tops!
Easy Organization Tip 3
Use a Storage Cabinet with Drawers vs. a Chest of Drawers
My husband found this pie safe in my dad’s farm shed. It was covered in green paint. He painstakingly removed the paint and refinished it. He has stored his clothes in it for 40 years. Pictured are 20 work shirts, 13 pairs of jeans, 11 pairs of shorts, 6 pair of “lounge” pants and swim trunks. It’s a very functional and beautiful piece of furniture. There is no way he could store all those in a chest of drawers, which would take up the same amount of floor space. Plus, he is much better at closing the doors than he is at closing drawers!!
Easy Organization Tip 4
Keep Laundry Hamper in, or near, Bathroom
My husband doesn’t see the need to put the laundry in a hamper. I have discovered that he is much more likely to do so if the hamper is near where he sheds his clothes before a shower! The door pictured is to our master bath.
He still rarely gets them all the way in the hamper–a sleeve or leg is hanging over the side or the clothes are on the floor beside it, but it works better than anything else I’ve ever tried!
Easy Organization Tip 5
Keep a Quilt Rack Beside the Bed
This tip is for people who like extra pillows, shams and throws on their made bed. When I get ready for bed, I can quickly store all those items on top of my quilt rack.
They stay cleaner and are conveniently located when I remake the bed…whenever that might be! HA!!
Organization Tip 6
Use a Bookcase Headboard to Hide Necessities
I surprised myself when I selected a bookcase bed frame about 15 years ago. It was never a style I liked, but when I saw this bed, I thought it was really pretty and it had built-in reading lights on both sides.
It turns out, I never use those reading lights, but the bed became very valuable to me when both my husband and I were diagnosed with sleep apnea. Let me tell you, there is nothing attractive about the way we look wearing the head gear of a CPAP machine. A friend, Margaret, once described it as looking like an elephant whereas, I think it’s more of an astronaut look (neither invokes sexiness)!
They also aren’t attractive decor objects. No worries at our house, though, because we can keep them on our bookshelf and hide them with the pillows!
Easy Organization Tip 7
Store Belts near the Closet
I bought this cute little hanger on clearance somewhere. Finally decided to hang it by my husband’s closet door. He’s more likely to hang his belts up with this convenient location.
Easy Organization Tip 8
Assign Dresser Space by Sides
My drawers are on the left; his are on the right. We always know where our socks, underwear and pajamas are! He rarely completely closes a drawer. (What is it with men?)
Easy Organization Tip 9
Keep a Small Step Stool inside Closet
If you are lucky enough, like we are, you have room for two shelves above your clothes rack. I store my seasonal quilts, throws and pillows on the top shelf. Storing a small step stool against a wall inside the closet allows for quick retrieval of top-shelf items. — I havn’t done this one yet. A stool is on my shopping list.
What About You?
Do you do any of the things I’ve listed? Do they sound like something only a retired person would have time for?
Truthfully, I really wish I had the convenience of the velvet hangers and had sorted my clothes by color when I was working because I now know it speeds things up in the long run. I was even brazen enough to reorganize my daughter-in-law’s closet after giving her new hangers. (Probably not my brightest move, but she didn’t get mad at me)! I have always enjoyed doing laundry but couldn’t keep up when the kids were very young. I’d often come home to find that my mom had done all the laundry and put it up for me. I loved that she did this during that stage of my life! She’d make the bed, too. That’s something I’ve never done consistently.
